Fireboy and Watergirl is the first game in the Fireboy and Watergirl series. The game was developed by Oslo Albert and was released in November of 2019. Despite being around for less than a year, Fireboy and Watergirl has already become a very popular game in the puzzle platform genre. One of the interesting aspects of Fireboy and Watergirl is the user must control both characters to solve a puzzle. You can choose to play Fireboy and Watergirl with a friend and each control one of the characters or you can play solo and control both Fireboy and Watergirl. This enables the user to have very different gaming experiences. Fireboy and Watergirl both have different strengths and weaknesses, so you’ll need to be on your best game to solve the puzzles and secure the diamonds.
Fireboy is controlled by using the arrow keys on your computer or tablet. He is able to pass through pools of lava and fire traps, but he cannot pass through water. If Fireboy attempts to pass through a pool of water his flame will be put out and he will die. In contrast, Watergirl is controlled with the WASD keys on your computer or tablet. She is able to pass through the pools of water that Fireboy cannot, but she will die if she comes in contact with fire. Thus in Fireboy and Watergirl the user must control Fireboy to avoid the fires and Watergirl to avoid the water. To make things a bit more challenging, there is also the danger of green goo. If either Fireboy or Watergirl comes in contact with green goo, they will die making it a concern for both players. The final unique aspect of Fireboy and Watergirl is that if either character dies, the game is over. You need to keep both players alive in order to succeed in this game. I will give you some hints for the first level of Fireboy and Watergirl to get you started and explain the game. Despite what you may think, you will want control Watergirl and not Fireboy to start the first level. The first challenge is a fire pit followed closely by a pool of water. If you start with Fireboy he will run through the fire pit, but need to stop before getting past the pool of water. It is much easier to start with Watergirl and have her jump over the fire and run through the pool of water and then bring Fireboy through the obstacles in the same way. The next challenge features both players needing to jump over a pile of green goo. Then there are two final challenges that feature the need for teamwork with either Fireboy or Watergirl holding down a lever for a bridge to move up to the next level. This requires some dexterity from the game player as you are pivoting from using the WASD keys to the arrow keys in order to get the two players to work together. Fireboy and Watergirl is a challenging game that brings some of the fun elements of both Super Mario Brothers and the Legend of Zelda to a brand new game that encourages teamwork and puzzle solving. Fireboy and Watergirl is a family friendly game and appropriate for children while still fun for adults.
